Netbooks are small laptops. They are intended for portability and low cost. The Netbook has a low-cost/low-power and eventually a little low performance processor such as the Intel Atom or Via C7.
Because of this, most tasks are limited to basic internet surfing, basic multimedia, e-mail and other basic applications.
No DVD or CD Roms. Screen sizes vary from 7″ to 10″.
If Netbook has Linux OS on it, then it is equipped with small capacity SSDs instead of a standard hard drives.
Most Windows XP netbooks are equipped with a standard laptop hard drive.
Here are some pros’ compared to a regular laptop:
- It’s really small and light.
- The screen is big and bright for its small size.
- It dual boots linux and XP.
- The Atom processor seems ok for web browsing.
- Good enough for basic computer tasks
- It is cheap.
Cons compared to a regular laptop:
- Small screen/lower resolution, small keyboard due to small size. The small screen has problems with some websites that flash up screens with no scroll buttons.
- Limited processing power
- Hardware upgrades can be more challenging
- Due to lower processing capabilities, size and cost, advanced features are less adopted (Bluetooth, HDMI, etc..)
- The keyboard is too small. You may not be able to type nearly as fast as you would like.
- Battery life is less than 4 hours.
You should use netbooks as a 2nd laptop when portability is needed (excellent for travel or leisure purposes). If you plan to do serious work with your computer, it is recommended getting a standard laptop.
