Here are some tips for buying a new computer
First, you have to consider the amount of money you are willing to spend on your new computer. Then, decide why you need this computer, what you are going to be using it for.
Are you going to use it for home or business? Are you a gamer? Are you going to do a lot of photo or video editing? Or are you going to buy a lot of music from iTunes or else?
Now that you know how much you can afford to spend and what you want to do with your new computer you can start to weed out the PC’s that aren’t for you.
  • If all you’re going to do with your new computer is surf the internet and send email, then something with a dual core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM and a 80 gigabyte hard drive should be perfect for you. Something like this is around the $250-300 range
  • If you’re into photo/video editing, you’re going to want at least a dual core processor, 512Mb of video memory, at least 2 gigabytes of RAM and at least 100 gigabyte hard drive. You can find a computer to fit these needs for around $350-400
  • If you’re a music or movie enthusiast, you can get by with a computer like mentioned above, but you’re going to want a larger hard drive so you don’t run out of storage too soon.
  • The PC gamer will wind up spending the most money for their computer. You should look for a computer with a 64bit operating system (32 bit version of Windows won’t utilize more than 3 gigabytes of RAM), a quad core processor, at least 4 gigabytes of RAM, at the very least a 512Mb video card although 1 gigabyte is recommended for newer games and at least a 500 gigabyte hard drive. Something like this can be purchased for $500-800. You can often get away with buying a nice computer with low to mid grade built in video for a little less cash and then upgrade the video capabilities with an after market PCI Express video card.
These specifications are merely suggestions and are not set in stone. There are other factors to be considered when purchasing your new computer but this will get you headed in the right direction. Do not rush to make your computer purchase otherwise you may end up having to upgrade sooner than later.

When you reinstall Windows on your computer it gives you an instant reset button.

It brings back your computer back to the way it was when you first bought it. It means, you get a new computer again.

So, when should you reinstall Windows?:

  • When virus or spyware infected your registry beyond repair.
  • Windows startup files are corrupted.
  • Computer is running slowly.

Before you reinstall Windows, make sure that you back up your important files first, because reinstalling Windows will wipe out your whole hard drive meaning your files and programs will also be deleted.  That removal process is what makes it such a good thing to do.  It gives you a clean slate by removing any virus, spyware, or corruption in Windows.  In turn, you get a practically brand new computer minus the current shelf life of your PC.  Even if your computer is running sluggish, it is a good rule of thumb to reinstall Windows every 2-3 years to give it the pep it needs.

If you have difficulty to reinstall Windows, please call VA Denver Computer Services.

Does your computer run multiple anti-virus programs? If the answer is “Yes”, you should remove all of them and leave just one anti-virus program. Having multiple anti-virus programs will not provide better protection against spyware and viruses. Having two real-time anti-virus protection programs will make them conflict with each other and slow down your computer.  One anti-virus program is more than enough protection for your computer and already uses plenty of system resources that slow down the system the way it is.  However, you can have an additional anti-virus or anti-spy-ware scanner on your PC, but, still, that will just about have the same function as the other scanner on your computer that comes with your anti-virus software making this scanner repetitive.

For example good anti-virus software packages are: Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes AntiMalware software.

Remember to install anti-virus software before you have a virus as installing it during a virus attack will not help.

Water spills could be dangerous for your computer.  Since the sugar could further corrode the laptop parts, soda or alcohol spills are even worse

So, here are steps you should take if you spilled liquid on your laptops:

      • Turn off your computer immediately.
      • Then remove the battery and remove the hard drive to avoid data loss.
      • Open your screen as much as possible and place your laptop on a flat surface with the keyboard faced down.
      • Take a hair dryer and blow, blow, and blow!  This will help dissipate the liquid.
      • Do not even think of turning your computer on again right away.  Keep your laptop off for at least 3-4 days.
      • After 3-4 days, turn your laptop on and hope for the best.

Hopefully the keyboard trapped the liquid and the rest of your laptop is safe.  If your laptop still does not turn on call specialist at VA Denver Computer Services for further assistance.
