Author: It could be frustrating trying to figure out what to do to tune-up your computer. If you follow the below Computer tune-up checklist periodically, you’ll be good to go:
- Make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware software are up to date. If not, install this free security software.
- Replace your surge protector if older than 1 year or you already experienced a surge or blackout.
- Install the latest Windows updates.
- Go to add/remove programs and remove and any unnecessary programs and games (i am sure you have programs that you never used in 2 years).
- Defrag your computer. Click on Start and perform a search for “Disk Defragmenter” to pull up this program, or download “Defraggler” from this page.

You are using Windows XP or Windows Vista and you wonder if you should upgrade it to Windows 7 or not. Well, It depends what operating system you are running.
If you are running Windows XP, do not upgrade, because Windows XP is stable and will last fine as long as your hardware doesn’t crash.
If you have Windows Vista, then it is the time. This operating system is typically slows down when you run it over time. With Windows Vista you will need 4 GB of RAM to be in good shape. And it is one of a few issues why Vista users should upgrade to Windows 7.
You can run Windows 7 with only 1GB of RAM and it is compatible with software/hardware from Windows Vista, XP, 2000, and NT. Although Microsoft claims you can upgrade from Vista directly to Windows 7, which is true, it is recommended to back up your files first and heavily consider performing a fresh install of Windows. When upgrading an operating system, the flaws and issues typically also come along with the upgrade and could cause the same issues. It is easier to upgrade since the software and configurations are supposed to carry over. If you’d like to try to perform the upgrade, we still recommend to back up your files in case you’re not happy with the upgrade due to lingering Windows Vista issues carrying over.
After you install Windows 7, don’t be disappointed when you see the same Windows Vista interface. Windows, for lack of time, decided to keep the same graphical user interface (GUI), or view, of Windows Vista for Windows 7. Don’t worry – the stability and quick navigation under the hood is a huge improvement and will be appreciated.

You always ask yourself: “What is the difference between spyware & virus?”
Spyware will pop-up with a message, on the lower right, providing warnings of your infection. There are many anti-spyware softwares out there, however, they are not typically updated to resolve the rapidly new instances of spyware that are released daily. Moreover, users forget to protect their PCs from spyware, because they think that their anti-virus software will protect against everything.
Spyware has multiple effects such as:
- spamming
- slowing down the PC
- providing fake spyware software for fee
Viruses are easier to catch and kill. Your anti-virus software should be running 24/7, while you are working on your PC.Your anti-virus software HAS TO BE up to date, otherwise it will quarantine the virus instead of killing it. In the worse case, your anti-virus software will not pick up the rogue virus and your system could:
- get slow
- turn off unexpectedly
- e-mail the virus to other network computers and contacts
- incapacitate programs and functionality
- crash the computer

If your Windows 7 does not start, do not worry. It is very easy now to fix this OS. Here are the steps how to fix it:
- Insert your Windows 7 DVD and boot up to it by pressing any key when prompted.
- Press Next when the Windows 7 process reaches the language screen.
- Click on Repair your computer.
- The Repair option will then look for your Windows operating system.
- Choose the Windows 7 operating system that is not booting up. Most likely, there will just be one listed.
- Then, choose Startup Repair from the list.
- Afterwards, the Startup Repair will look for issues and provide a solution.
- Follow the solution provided by accepting the default prompts to fix.
- The Windows 7 Startup Repair utility will look to fix the issue and restart if necessary.
- Perform System Restore if the above didn’t work, and if you have already backed up your files
