Digital communication and hence the devices to enable this communication has revolutionized the way things are done.  Just over a decade ago we had letters and greeting cards to convey our thoughts and feelings but today we don’t even consider that as an option. Everything has gone digital.  Induction of PC in our daily life not only reduced the duration to perform a certain task but also increased the efficiency and accuracy.  Consequently internet evolved as the primary medium for communication and information sharing, thus inviting hardware devices to match the software advancements.

It did not take long to for the innovation to move from the working desk into one’s own hand to stay connected with the induction of smart phones and touch devices, i.e. Tablets as they are commonly called these days.

Apple’s introduction of #iPad was the main driver of this revolution in touch device industry.  This hand-held device fulfilled all the requirements that a normal internet user wanted.  Browsing the internet, checking emails, reading documents and even playing games are just a few things which does not require going to your working desk and turning on the PC.  High bandwidth and availability of secure network devices also contributed in making the #Tablets a device of choice for common use.

Following Apple’s footstep many hardware manufacturers jumped in and produced a healthy competition which resulted not only in challenging #Apple’s iPad domination but also in reduction of the prices of Tablets.  Though Apple is still the market leader of Tablet sales, Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, Microsoft and Google have considerably captured their market share.

Google’s introduction of #Android OS is another factor in accelerating the Tablet sales.  Although Google’s Nexus (Google’s Tablet device) did not impact the market as they expected, but it did open up many low cost devices to penetrate and grabbed a good chunk of the sales market.

Tablet fall somewhere between smart phones and laptops.  They lack some of the functionality offered by the laptops while on the other hand, can perform more functions as compared with the smart phones.  In short it really depends upon the device it is being compared with.  Generally speaking, Tablets are good, or maybe ideal, for certain tasks while not so sophisticated for some functions.

Tablets are designed to be sleek and handy.  Following are a few common specifications of popular Tablets.

Dimensions:    Generally they are somewhere around 8 inches in height, about 5 inches in width and just around 0.30 inches in thickness. For example iPad-mini’s dimensions are 7.87 x 5.30 x 0.29 inches while Galaxy Note 8.0 has 8.30 x 5.35 x 0.31 inches.

Screen Size:     Depending on the dimension, the screen sizes revolve around 8 inches

Resolution:      The screen resolutions are 1280 x 800 in general and can go up to 2048 x 1536.

Processor:       Most of the Tablets contain over 1 GHz process sufficient enough for normal use.

RAM:                 Memory values generally fall in between 1GB to 2GB.

OS:                      These days most of the Tablets are using Android OS.  Few uses their propriety or operating systems like Apple’s iOS or kindle’s Fire OS.

  • Slim design of the Tablets is ideal when mobility is considered.  It can easily be used while holding in one hand even when standing, strolling or travelling.
  • Lightweight to carry and does not require additional carrying bag.  Slide it into its sleeve and can be carried whole day long without feeling additional weight as compared to laptops.
